Well, last night Cohen got his first major injury. With this crazy kid, it's hard to believe that he went almost two years without an injury. Ha. Actually, we've hardly had to even use band-aids on him and yesterday he had to get two staples..in his head! We were done trick or treating at the mall and doing a little shopping. He somehow fell into one of the shelves that the clothes were on. I just assume he bumped his head and then saw the blood! Oh my goodness he is bleeding! I thought it was coming out of his ear, but it wasn't! So we are in the middle of the store and I am grabbing wipes out of his diaper bag to try to stop the bleeding. He had blood all over the side of his face and his hair. Meanwhile, not a single person in the store stopped to help us. The store was about to close and I think the just wanted us out of there. Ugh. Anyway, so the bleeding slowed down, I gave him a sucker so he would calmly sit in his stroller and we headed out of the store. We were about to leave the mall, not really sure what we were going to do. Does he need stitches? Where do we go? Panic Mom mode. While my husband stepped outside to cool off (apparently the blood was too much for him, which is so unlike him!) I asked a random stranger for advice. What? She looked motherly. :) She mentioned that there was an urgent care facility right across the street. Duh! We've driven past it 100 times!
So we took Cohen there. First, they put numbing gel on him. The put it on a cotton ball and then had to secure it to his head for 30 minutes. Cohen did so good! He sat there and played his game in my kindle. And didn't even really notice the laceration on his head or the giant thing wrapped around his head, which is crazy since we are talking about the kid that won't even wear a hat! At first he just had the one wrapped around his forehead and then he would say, "uh oh" and we would see it slipping off. He was so concerned about it! The nurse then wrapped the chin strap around him to secure it better. (Pictures below...sorry if they make you queasy.)
While waiting for the numbing gel to work, he fell asleep. Well, then the doctor had to inject more numbing stuff into the area with a needle. Needless to say that woke him up. He cried and panicked. Not sure if was because it hurt or if it was just because we woke him up and were all in his face. Then she put 2 staples on the cut. Ever watch that? It's just like heavy duty staples and a staple gun. Ick. Not cool, but at least it was quick. After that he was awake for the 15 minute ride home and then wanted something to eat and then this kid was just wide away and crazy! He eventually went to bed around 11. We were so thankful that he still acted completely normal. We so proud of him...our little tough guy!
We go back to the doctor in a week to get his staples out...hopefully it is quick, easy and relatively painless. Until then, mom and dad will continue to freak out every time his head gets near anything that isn't his pillow! :)
Love,
Katie
